This year we are going to pilot selected Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) items in the classroom - some constructed response items and some performance tasks. Teachers met in May 2013 to select SBAC items that everyone in the district will administer in the classroom throughout the year. You can see them posted below by grade and content level.
It is important to emphasize that these SBAC Pilot items in RUSD will not be part of the quarterly Checkpoint reporting. The purpose is make sure every teacher is familiar with the SBAC assessment and the implications for instruction. Approach the SBAC pilot items this year as learners. Take this opportunity to understand the format and make the adjustments in instruction now, a full year before the SBAC is administered across California and many other states. By using release items from SBAC, we are using the "gold standard" in terms of what can expect to see on the assessments beginning 2014-2015.
We understand this is a very complex transition in our assessment system. At the September Articulation Day, every teacher will have the opportunity to learn more about the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) tests and the items that we are going to try out this year. The remaining articulation days throughout the year will be structured time to continue to review and calibrate these pilot items.
As you review the items below, keep in mind that these are the official SBAC Item Specification sheets, with detailed information about how the item was constructed and expectations for student performance. During the September Articulation day, all teachers will learn about the various components of these SBAC Item Specification sheets. Also, the items below will be "repackaged" to be administered through OARS Online or hard copy through reprographics.
